جیمز هتفیلد درسوم آگوست سال 1963 در شهر "دونی" درمنطقه "لوس آنجلس"در ایالت "کالیفرنیا" به دنیا آمد.پدر و مادراو ",ویرجیل" و"سینتیا" از پیروان و هواخواهان تعصبي فرقه مسيحيان پروتستان بودند, از این رو, بیشتر دوران جوانی او تحت الشعاع مذهب قرار گرفت.آنها بنا براعتقاداتشان به شدت مخالف مصرف دارو و یا هر گونه کمک پزشکی بودند و ازاعتقاد خود دست نکشیدند تا زمانی که درگذشت مادراو براثر بیماری سرطان درشرف وقوع بود.مرگ مادر جیمز و متعاقباً رابطه آشفته ی او با مذهب هردو مسایلی هستند که همواره موضوع اصلی برخی از اشعارگروه Metallica بوده اند(ترانه های Mama Said"" و The God That Failed" "درمورد مادر و پدر جیمز و ترانه "Until It Sleeps" درمورد بیماری سرطان است که موجب مرگ هردوی آنها شد.).
جیمز 9 ساله بود که اولین تعلیمات ساز پیانو را فرا گرفت.او سپس شروع به نواختن درامف برادرش دیوید کرد و سرانجام در سن چهارده سالگی اولین گیتار را بر دوش آویخت.مشوق اصلی او "Aerosmith"و گروه های دیگری مانند Black Sabbath","The Beatlesd","Queen","Led Zeppelin"" و"Thin Lizzy"بودند."هتفیلد" اولین گروه خود را به نام"Obsession" درسال های آغازین نوجوانی اش تشکیل داد.این گروه متشکل از برادران "ولوز" به عنوان نوازندگان باس و درام،"جیم آرنولد" نوازنده گیتار و "هتفیلد" به عنوان خواننده اصلی بود.اما خیلی زود خروج برادران "ولوز" موجب از هم گسستن گروه شد.
جیمز پس از عظیمت به شهر "بری" به سبب مرگ مادرش،به دبیرستان "بری اولیندا" رفت و در آنجا با "جیم مولیگان" که یک نوازنده درام بود آشنا شد.او سپس دومین گروه خود را با نام"Phantom Lord" که متشکل از یکی از همکلاسی های آنها به نام "هو تنر"،به عنوان نوازنده گیتار،"مولیگان" نوازنده درام و جیمز به عنوان خواننده و نوازنده گیتار بود.گروه تا زمان فارغ التحصیلی تعداد محدودی نوازنده باس را به خدمت گرفت،این زمانی بود که جیمز به شهر "دونی" بازگشت و سومین گروهی را که رهبری آنرا بر عهده داشت با نام "Leather Charm" تشکیل داد.تنها تفاوت اين گروه با گروه قبلي این بود که جیمز دیگر گیتار نمی نواخت،در حالی که "تنر" و "مولیگان" همان جایگاه های قبلی را داشتند."Leather Charm"عمداتاً یک گروه"Hard Rock" نواز بود.این گروه موفق به اجرای موسیقی در چند مهمانی شد اما سپس شروع به ازهم گسستن کرد.ابتدا "تنر" گروه را ترک کرد،سپس "مولیگان" از گروه جدا شد تا به یک گروه بهتر بپیوندد.به سبب فقدان نوازنده درام،باقی اعضای گروه نیز تصمیم به جدایی گرفتند.این امر باعث شد تا جیمز به دنبال یک نوازنده درام جدید بگردد."هو تنر" او را به "لارز اولریچ" معرفی کرد.و سپس "جیمز" و "لارز" محبوب ترین گروه راک نواز تاریخ را به نام "Metallica"تشکیل دادند.جیمز هتفیلد به عنوان قلب و روح متالیکا شناخته شده است،او همچنین نظارتی استبدادی بر روی محصول نهایی گروه دارد.
در حین ضبط آلبوم"St.anger" جیمز تصمیم به ترک اعتیاد خود به مشروبات الکلی را گرفت.الکل مانند تله ای بود که او را از دوران کودکی اش به دام انداخته بود و در افسردگی نگه می داشت.حتی رفتارهای مضحکانه گروه بر اثر مصرف مشروبات الکلی باعث شد تا به آنها لقب"Alcoholica" داده شود.جیمز پس از 9 ماه به گروه بازگشت.او در حال حاضر هشیار و سالم است و تصمیم دارد همینطور باقی بماند،با وجود تمام وسوسه هایی که ستارگان موسیقی راک را دنبال می کند.

James Hetfield was born on August 3,1963 in Downey, Los Angeles county, California. His father, Virgil and mother, Cynthia were devout and strict adherents to Christian Science, and accordingly, much of his young life revolved around religion. In accordance with their beliefs, Hetfield's parents strongly disapproved of medicine or any medical help and remained vigilant in their faith even as his mother began to die of cancer. Her death, and his subsequently turbulent relationship with religion, are both recurring subjects which have been the focal point of some of Metallica's lyrics (the songs "Mama Said," and "The God That Failed" are about Hetfield's mother and father, and "Until It Sleeps" is about cancer, of which both of his parents died).
James was 9 years old when he took his first piano lessons, before taking on his brother David's drums and finally picking up a guitar at the age of fourteen.His main influence was Aerosmith and other bands such as Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy. Hetfield formed his first band, Obsession, in his early teens. Composed of the Veloz brothers on bass and drums, Jim Arnold on guitar, and Hetfield providing lead vocals.But the band was soon crumbled by the quit of veloz brothers.
After moving to Brea city, due to the death of his mother, James attended Brea Olinda High School and met up with drummer Jim Mulligan.And then he formed his second band named"Phantom lord". with one of their classmastes,Hugh Tanner on guitar, Mulligan on drums, and James singing while also playing guitar. The group went through a few bass players until graduation, when James moved back to Downey and then the third band under Hetfield's leadership, Leather Charm, was born. The only difference between 'Charm' and 'Lord' was James no longer played guitar while Tanner and Mulligan retained their former 'Lord' positions. 'Leather Charm' was largely a hard rock combo. The band managed to perform at a few parties, but then began to fall apart.First, Tanner left the band, then Mulligan left for a more progressive band. Without a drummer, the rest of the band decided to call it quits.This led to James searching for a new drummer. Hugh Tanner introduced him to Lars Ulrich.And then Jaames and Lars formed the most popular rock band ever,Metallica.Hetfield is characterized as the heart and soul of Metallica, he has also a dictatorial control over the final product.
During the recording of the St.anger album, Hetfield decided to rehabilitate his alcoholism . Alcohol was the trap that kept him in depression that had affected him since childhood .Even the band's alcoholic antics earned them the nickname 'Alcoholica'. Hetfield rejoined the band after 9 months. He is now sober and clean and is determined to remain so, despite the many temptations dogging rock stars[/align]
